WEST ELM HOTELS

As leaders in design, West Elm set out to create a hotel experience that showcases the best each city has to offer. By collaborating with local makers, artists, and designers, they proposed singular spaces that celebrate the character of the community. Each hotel has its own distinctive point of view, informed by West Elm’s unique, modern perspective.

Starting with the three inaugural locations—Indianapolis, Oakland, and Detroit—we created a branding and way finding system for each location that feels completely unique but inherently West Elm.

OAKLAND, CA

The Wright blends industrial, mid-century and modern California architecture and design—with a laid back, residential feel. Curved signage with white oak accents and a muted palette compliments the mixed materials in the space, without being overly distracting.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN

A historic Coca Cola bottling plant gets a modern reinterpretation. Inspired by the restored architecture of the 1930’s bottling plant, the wayfinding is a nod to the Art Deco era using illuminated milk glass with aged brass framework and hints of neon as a modern accent.

DETROIT, MI

The Canfield juxtaposes American Modernism with the lush interiors of Saarinen House at Cranbook. The rigid structure of the wayfinding’s metal framework, inspired by the city’s industrial history, is offset by a soft color palette and lush interiors.
